What's Good - By Frank Wood

Hi all! I would like to mention that if you have any comments (good or bad) about this column, let me know. Also if anyone wants to recommend any bands or bars or whatever, let me know.

Things are looking up here at Stemway.com/FrankWoodPresents. In the coming months we will be showcasing up and coming bands in a village location on Sun afternoons. These will be all ages shows, so it will be agreat opportunity to check out the latest stuff that's comingout. We will also be opening a live venue in the theatre district in one of the world-renowned hotels in the area.
Benefits for the victims of our wake-up call are popping up all over. TOBACCO ROAD (41 st & 9 ave) is having a 24 hour benefit for the Port Authority workers families on OCT 6, 2001. ON OCT 28 Stemway.com, along with NYROCK.COM and FRANKWOOD PRESENTS will be doing a benefit at ARLENE'S GROCERY (stanton & ludlow sts) for the families of NYFD Squad 1 from Union st in Brooklyn. The brother-in-law of Leah (2Chicks and a Casio) was one of the heroes who gave it all for all of us and did not return, I'll have details later.

The 169 bar and restaurant (169 e bwy, nyc) will have an all ages benefit for the WTC relief fund. Black Flamingo will be performing her new song about the incident with many others(1pm-6pm). Not to be forgotten will be the Firefighters childrens' fund benefit at cbgb's featuring some top name acts that I'll inform you about as they confirm.

Mon the 24 was supposed to be a quiet nite, but... It started at ARLENE's with a band from R.I., THE COMPLAINTS., reassuring me that the best bands are from nyc. Then it was off for dinner at the Orchard Lounge and Grille (www.ORCHARDLOUNGEGRILL.COM) where Stemway.com and FrankWoodPresents will be doing after work jazz and then some. We proceeded to the Bar-B for another benefit and saw our friend Gino perform.

He gave me great Yankee tickets so I won't review him. After a quick pop to Bkln., it was off to El Patio and the band PUPPET feat' Mika Gough, whom I've reviewed before. After a quick snack ( I don't know what it was, but whatever it was it was delicious) we then decided to stroll down Ave B to the C-NOTE (ave c & e 10 st) to see ELEFUNK once again. We got caught up and were too late to catch Annie Golden ( The Shirts ) at cbgb's(Bowery and Bleecher sts) . Having to drop off some flyers we went to CLUB GROOVE (125 MacDougal st, c/o w 3 st,nyc), where we caught SWISS REMIX an interesting mix of rap, hiphop, punk, funk and dj"s.

Cruising back across town we stopped at KENNY'S CASTAWAYS< the BACK FENCE, MZ, and the BITTER END. All of which had live music and an interesting cast of bar characters.. BY now I was ready to chill which can only mean one thing: MOTOR CITY BAR (Ludlow & Rivington sts, nyc), Zameira was behind the bar and Pat Pervert and Jack were spinning the tunes, so it was another perfect ending for a long nite.

Don"t Forget this Sat at the GROOVE is Stemway.com & FrankWoodPresents Jazz brunch from 1pm untill 9pm, featuring Sachiko at 3pm, SUPERGROOVE at 4pm, Maury Epstein at 5pm, then we switch away from jazz to the r&b styling of Joy Ryder and the NY Rhythm All-Stars at 6:30). Last Sat. we had a surprise guest pop in a do a few tunes, Bobby McFerrin. So stop, by introduce yourself and have a relaxing time.

Until next time,
Take Care, FRANK WOOD
